A glimpse of the future in animal nutrition science. 1. Past and future challenges R. Bras. Zootec.
Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Almeida,Amélia Katiane de; Atzori,Alberto Stanislao; Muir,James Pierre; Fonseca,Mozart Alves; Cannas,Antonello.
ABSTRACT If the world population continues to increase exponentially, wealth and education inequalities might become more pronounced in the developing world. Thus, offering affordable, high-quality protein food to people will become more important and daunting than ever. Past and future challenges will increasingly demand quicker and more innovative and efficient solutions. Animal scientists around the globe currently face many challenging issues: from ensuring food security to prevent excess of nutrient intake by humans, from animal welfare to working with genetic-engineered animals, from carbon footprint to water footprint, and from improved animal nutrition to altering the rumen microbiome. Many of these issues are most likely to continue (or to...

A glimpse of the future in animal nutrition science. 2. Current and future solutions R. Bras. Zootec.
Tedeschi,Luis Orlindo; Fonseca,Mozart Alves; Muir,James Pierre; Poppi,Dennis P.; Carstens,Gordon E.; Angerer,Jay P.; Fox,Danny Gene.
ABSTRACT Despite tremendous advancements in the livestock sector, additional opportunities exist to improve even further livestock production around the globe. Forecasting is not an exact science and it relies heavily on past and current knowledge. Improvements in the nutritional sciences (both human and animal) include a better understanding of agents that cause deterioration of human health, improving the quality of animal products, applying effective fetal programming, developing new feeds and feeding strategies, and revisiting longstanding technologies. Improvements in the understanding of the rumen microbiome will enable scientists to increase the fermentation efficiency and, hopefully, select microbial species of greater interest. Improvements in...

Características químicas para avaliação do processo fermentativo de silagens: uma proposta para qualificação da fermentação. Infoteca-e
TOMICH, T. R.; PEREIRA, L. G. R.; GONÇALVES, L C.; TOMICH, R. G. P.; BORGES, I..

Characterization of condensed tannins from native legumes of the Brazilian northeastern semi-arid Scientia Agricola
Guimarães-Beelen,Patrícia Mendes; Berchielli,Telma Teresinha; Beelen,Roger; Araújo Filho,João; Oliveira,Simone Gisele de.
Despite the possible influence of tannins on the nutritional value of the forages from Caatinga vegetation, there are few studies that evaluated their tannin concentration. This study was conducted to characterize condensed tannins present in the legumes species Mimosa hostilis (Jurema Preta), Mimosa caesalpinifolia (Sabiá) and Bauhinia cheilantha (Mororó), at three stages of their phenological cycle. The concentration of soluble tannin (ST), bound tannin (BT) and total tannin (TT) were determined using the butanol-HCL method; astringency was by the radial diffusion method, and the monomeric composition of purified tannins by a high-performance liquid chromatograph with delphinidin, cyanidin and pelargonidin as standards. Concentration and astringency of...

Determination of methanol residues in crude glycerol for animal feed by gas chromatography Scientia Agricola
Nazato,Carina; Romero,Alessandra de Cássia; Abdalla,Adibe Luiz.
ABSTRACT: Crude glycerol is a major by-product of biodiesel production and is an economical additive feed for ruminants. However, residual methanol in crude glycerol can be harmful to animal health. Several methods exist for quantifying methanol residues in biodiesel, yet few have been described that identify the methanol level in crude glycerol. We propose a method for determining the methanol level in crude glycerol destined for animal feed. Crude glycerol was extracted from the headspace and quantified by gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector (GC-FID). The method was linear up to 0.5 % of methanol. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.015 and 0.031 %, respectively. No significant matrix effects were observed....

Footrot outbreak in a sheep herd in the Araçatuba region, state of S. Paulo, Brazil MV&Z
Rodrigues, Celso Antônio; Mendes, Luiz Cláudio Nogueira; Peiró, Juliana Regina; Feitosa, Francisco Leydson Formiga.
Footrot is a multifactorial, contagious, bacterial disease that starts in the interdigital space and spreads to the horny parts of the feet, particularly in sheep. Dichelobacter nodosus (Bacteroides nodosus) is the causing agent and main pathogen of this complex disease. The classification of footrot as virulent or benign is based on the proteolytic characteristics of the bacteria and extension of epidermal matrix involvement, and hence the degree of hom separation. The disease is particularly prevalent in the Brazilian South states and is found less often in the state of S. Paulo. The objective of this study was to report an outbreak of the virulent form of the disease in a 400-sheep farm in the region of Araçatuba, after some animals from the state of...

Gross anatomy of the stomach of the pampas deer, Ozotoceros bezoarticus (Artiodactyla: Cervidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Perez,William; Ungerfeld,Rodolfo.
The macroscopic anatomy of the stomach of the adult pampas deer, Ozotoceros bezoarticus (Linnaeus, 1758), a cervid species considered to ingest high quantities of grass in its natural diet, was described. Fourteen deceased adult pampas deer of both sexes from a captive breeding station were used for this study. There were no differences in the absolute or relative size from the different compartments of the stomach in relation to gender. Compared to measurements in other ruminants, pampas deer appeared anatomically capable of feeding on a variety of diets as an 'intermediate feeder'.
